Welcome to Hardwick, Massachusetts
and the Villages of Gilbertville,
Wheelwright and Old Furnace

The first settlement was called "Lambstown" after a prominent proprietor. By 1738 it had attracted enough settlers and met all the requirements to be incorporated as the town of Hardwick.

The Ware River running through the east and south parts of the town made an excellent source of water power and several good-sized textile mills were added to the paper and boot and shoe factories.
